Visual collages in the form of a site-specific installation in a public space that is part of the historically important bastion passages in Tallinn reveal what is hidden behind the many layers of material that is a silent witness to events. This material speaks to us in the language of holes, of crumbling and charred walls. It watches us through the ever-widening gaps in the substance, appealing to random passersby with a certain urgency to stop and reflect on their relationship with this place. They may have once built it for their needs but now it has transformed into something wildly unnecessary, suitable only for covering up the even wilder urban infrastructure with additional layers. The Extension project is a window through these layers in an attempt to use visual metaphor to explore what this artificial/natural protective zone in the middle of the city symbolises and how it can be incorporated in the best way possible into urban planning.

Jakub Tulinger

is a graduate of the master's programme at the FAMU Department of Photography and has long been working with the concept of witnessing and its crossover into materiality. He is interested in the relationship between man and material, architecture and landscape, and how or by what means these silent witnesses can speak to us. Using the tools of computer graphics and animation, he lends materials a voice and, through the stories they tell, attempts to look at the issues of today.
