Francesca Woodman – The Artist's Books

The photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981), who died prematurely, produced several artist's books during her years, but only one was published during her lifetime. The complete edition of all eight surviving artist's books from Mack is graphically and typographically simple yet stunning. Most of the author's publications are based on 19th-century Italian handbooks and diaries she purchased during her time in Rome, which are additionally interspersed with photographs, slides, and notes. All of this is seen here in perfect reproductions of complete double-page spreads, accurately inserted into the spine of the four-hundred-page book, including bookmarks, ribbons and fraying. The pinnacle of painstaking perfection is the nine blank double-page lined scrapbooks, yet they go far beyond the small scholarly comments between books.
