Contemporary Czech Photography and the Stories Water Tells: Two New Exhibitions at Fotograf Zone Gallry

What does fine art photography look like today? What can a photographic image capture, construct, or call into question? Opening on 19 November at Fotograf Zone Gallery, Continuum brings together a range of artistic approaches spanning different generations and forms of contemporary photography.
Curated by Markéta Kinterová, the exhibition features works by Hynek Alt and Iveta Schovancová, Pavel Baňka, Lenka Glisníková, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Václav Kopecký, Markéta Othová, the duo SHOTBY.us, Marie Tomanová, Aleksandra Vajd, Miroslava Večeřová, and Tereza Zelenková. The gallery's Video Room will also present Daughters of the Flood, a film by Marie Lukáčová and Karina Kottová, opening on the same day.
Photography is far more than a mere record of reality. It moves between past and present, private and public spaces, documentary and fiction. It evolves alongside technology, shaped by those who create images and the ways in which they work with them.
"Continuum presents contemporary fine art photography as a medium without clearly defined boundaries. By bringing together different generations, experiences, and creative strategies, the exhibition raises the question of just how far photography can reach today," says Markéta Kinterová, the exhibition's curator and founder of Fotograf Contemporary, the platform representing the exhibiting artists.
This diversity of approaches is reflected in the works on view. Libuše Jarcovjáková captures the world around her with characteristic immediacy, Marie Tomanová offers an intimate perspective on the experiences of a younger generation of immigrants, and Tereza Zelenková creates black-and-white images imbued with a melancholic, almost timeless atmosphere. Pavel Baňka explores order and symmetry, while Lenka Glisníková and the duo SHOTBY.us construct their own fictional worlds from real objects. Markéta Othová, meanwhile, sensitively captures the subtle moments of everyday life.
Václav Kopecký investigates the possibilities of both analogue and digital photography, Hynek Alt and Iveta Schovancová push the boundaries of the medium through contemporary technologies, and Miroslava Večeřová turns her attention to the forms and structures of animal and plant life. Together, their works reveal the many ways photography can be employed and how its possibilities shift depending on the techniques and subjects explored.
Continuum opens at a time when Fotograf Zone itself is seeking a new path forward. After 25 years of activity, the gallery faces an uncertain future and, for the first time, is asking the public for direct support to help it remain open in 2027. Beyond showcasing contemporary fine art photography, the exhibition therefore also highlights the importance of spaces that foster artistic creation, public engagement, and dialogue. All works on display are available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going towards supporting Fotograf Zone.
Daughters of the Flood: Family Memory, Water, and the Stories of Three Generations of Women
The gallery's basement Video Room will also screen Daughters of the Flood, a film by artist Marie Lukáčová and curator Karina Kottová. The film intertwines an intimate family story spanning three generations of women with mythology and ecological and political commentary. Personal conversations and memories are interwoven with archival footage of water, animated sequences, and semi-fictional television reports on floods.
Water becomes a thread connecting family memory with broader reflections on humanity's relationship with nature and on events whose consequences extend beyond individual lives. Blending documentary and fictional elements, the film brings personal history into dialogue with environmental and social issues.
