Makeupbrutalism

Budapest-born, London-based conceptual artist and former mua Eszter Magyar works with the face as a site of conflict, between surface and self, expectation and reality, pressure and resistance. Her ongoing project Makeupbrutalism uses makeup and photography to examine the aesthetics of being human under systems that demand smoothness, control, and constant improvement.
Magyar’s approach rejects beauty as a product or transformation. Instead, she treats makeup as raw material – a way to interrupt, stain or document the body. Each image is a small gesture of refusal: smudges are left uncleaned, wrinkles uncorrected, compulsions unhidden. The work speaks in quiet codes – cracked textures, obsessive markings, broken symmetry – drawing attention to what is usually erased.
