Gabriela Benish-Kalná – Anxiety of Multispecies Care
Gabriela Benish-Kalná examines the romanticisation of rural life and the modern dream of communal, self-sufficient farming. Her work addresses the growing urgency of the agricultural crisis while looking to long-established farming practices for ways of adapting to a new, life-threatening climate.
She explores how rural life is represented and imagined within the art world, which is increasingly turning towards questions of agriculture, community, and self-sufficiency. Stories of harsh winters, rising hay prices, dying birch trees, and traditional pig slaughters reveal the realities of living alongside other-than-human species, caring for a deteriorating ecosystem, and building community through trial and error.
Benish-Kalná runs ArtMill, a centre for regenerative art located in a remote part of the Šumava foothills. ArtMill is home to ArtDialog, a cultural and environmental non-profit organisation, and it is here that Benish-Kalná is gradually transforming an old mill into a viable working farm.

Gabriela Benish-Kalná is a Czech-American multimedia artist currently based at the ArtMill Center for Regenerative Arts in the Czech Republic. As the Director of ArtDialog, a non-profit organisation focused on environmental education and climate adaptation, she leads projects such as Inter-Species Refuge under the Creative Europe program. Benish-Kalná graduated from the Documentary Photography Studio at the FAMU Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and has worked with various non-profit and grassroots organizations for over a decade in the movement for social and environmental justice.
