Miloš Vojtěchovský – An Experiential Tour of Hell
The Central Slaughterhouse in Holešovice once resembled an almost self-contained town, or even a ghetto. Hidden behind high walls, the ten-hectare complex comprised 49 halls, a network of streets and squares, a power station, a bank, underground passageways, and railway tracks connecting it to the nearby Bubny station. A century ago, butchers here slaughtered and butchered as many as 87 million cows, pigs, and horses each year. The sound walk through the former slaughterhouse grounds evokes a time when the cries and wails of animals being transported and killed could be heard far across the surrounding area, while the drains carried the faint squeaking of a population of hundreds of thousands of rats living in the underground passages of this extermination camp in Prague 7.
bio
Miloš Vojtěchovský (b. 1955, Prague) is a curator and educator. He studied aesthetics and art history at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague and has been involved in experimental music and visual art since the mid-1970s. He has collaborated on projects including Imaginary Museum Projects in Amsterdam (Orbis Pictus Revisited, ZKM, 1992–1997) and Jitro kouzelníků at the National Gallery Prague. He taught at the Department of Art Theory and History at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology, and at the Center for Audiovisual Studies at FAMU in Prague. He has also worked as a curator at Školská 28 Gallery and founded the sound art platform sonicity.cz, as well as the Hermit Foundation symposia and the Center for Metamedia in Plasy. His projects include vs. Interpretation, Na pomezí samoty, and others.
