Many photographic books can be read from the middle, the end or the beginning. That alone is a pleasant invitation into their inner world, and in this case, also because the book functions as a kind of distillation of Engström’s work. The artist has reached a point of maturity and taken the time to revisit his archive; a process he describes as bringing him “the beauty of uncertainty” and a search primarily for movement, but also for oppositions or, conversely, motifs that support one another and evoke emotions and thoughts. As an audience, we may be captivated by the book’s lack of direction, its openness – whatever we choose to call it. It is like a river that flows: you can observe it from the shore, immerse yourself in it or even swim against the current. Nothing is required, no one judges us; we are simply allowed to look and let ourselves be guided by texts that reveal little about life, yet hint at much.
