Shells for Stories is a project about human connection in a society driven by competition, financial gain, and disconnection. Set in the heart of Manhattan – a symbol of radical capitalism – it documents encounters initiated through a simple exchange: a seashell for a personal story. For several weeks, I sat on the streets of New York City, offering seashells to strangers in return for a moment of storytelling. What I received in return were raw, generous glimpses into lives shaped by immigration, heartbreak, grief, resilience, courage, and intimate dreams. In a city where self-containment and emotional armour often dominate, I created a space for vulnerability – both theirs and mine. Shells for Stories explores the intangible currencies exchanged in this simple barter: curiosity, courage, vulnerability, openness, time, and trust.
