To the Aching Parts! (Manifest) by Polish artist Ania Nowak is a public speech that breaks down the language used by and against queer communities today. The text lacks grammar and is subject to the order and pleasure of rhythm. The video performance draws on historical references to the militancy of minorities in order to highlight the danger of normativity and the need for embodied intersectionality in forming queer alliances today. By daring to play with the language of resentment and trauma, as well as empathy and healing, it proposes destabilising identities, practices and well-known acronyms like LGB or FtM in the interest of a queer future that we cannot yet imagine.

Ania Nowak

is a Berlin-based artist working with performance, video, text, and installation. In her practice, she explores vulnerability, desire, and corporeality as tools for survival in times of crisis. She addresses themes of intimacy, illness, sexuality, and accessibility as potential sites of resistance. Her works have been presented at prestigious European institutions, and biennials, including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and Galerie Wedding in Berlin.

This issue explores language – its forms, possibilities, and limits. We look at how we communicate in the digital space, how the language of artificial intelligence changes our notions of creativity, and how visual images can replace words. You will discover why language is never neutral and how it shapes identity, creates inequalities, and opens paths to liberation. The issue features a reflection by bell hooks, the artistic practice of Eszter Magyar, projects documenting the Roma community in Brno, and visual essays by Claudia Larcher and Tabor Robak. The magazine presents language as a tool of communication, power, and resistance and invites you to reflect on what it truly means to talk to one another today.

Modern science recognises the underground network of fungal fibres, or mycelium, as the “brain of ecosystems”, an alternative to centralised consciousness. It offers a fertile ground for artistic and philosophical inquiry, stimulating deliberations on types of intelligence, models of communication, and the legitimacy of an anthropocentric worldview. Mycelium – worshipped in the religion of the goddess Lacteria, invented as part of the artistic work of Tamara Moyzes – is an empathetic structure, able to sow the seeds of functional and resilient bonds into the cracks of broken social systems.
