Pathway to the Goats, 2023

The two authors’ video essay Pathway to the Goats explores lesbian cruising in the wild. Centre stage is taken by whistling language as a means of reclaiming wilderness and public space for intimacy, which has long been primarily associated with male gay cruising. The work opens up the possibility of perceiving the sexuality of female and non-binary persons in nature as a just as legitimate, sensitive and playful form of encounter. It thus forms new spaces of trust and sharing, where intimacy overcomes ingrained notions and reshapes the relationship between the queer community and its environment.

Marta Orlando

is a visual artist working between Berlin and Palermo. She studied architecture in Naples and later trained under Douglas Gordon at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. In her work, she combines painting, writing, video, installations, and participatory forms, including tattooing. She explores the perception of space, identity, and gender through a personal and experimental lens.

Clémentine Roy

is a French artist working between Berlin and Palermo. They work with moving image, photography, publishing, and social practices. Their work addresses contemporary perceptions of nature, artificiality, and speculative fictions. They are a co-founder of the collectives Parkadia and SPIT. Their films have been screened at festivals in Rotterdam, Montreal, and Berlin. In 2024, their new film Arancia Bruciata was included in the competition at the Cinéma du Réel festival.

We look at how we communicate in the digital space, how the language of artificial intelligence changes our notions of creativity, and how visual images can replace words. You will discover why language is never neutral and how it shapes identity, creates inequalities, and opens paths to liberation. The issue features a reflection by bell hooks, the artistic practice of Eszter Magyar, projects documenting the Roma community in Brno, and visual essays by Claudia Larcher and Tabor Robak. The magazine presents language as a tool of communication, power, and resistance and invites you to reflect on what it truly means to talk to one another today.
