Yugonostalgia: Personal, Societal, Subversive, Banal, 2021
Eva Bevec addresses the political and cultural phenomenon of Yugonostalgia in her found-footage video essay of the same name. The term refers to the longing present in the countries of the former Yugoslavia: an emotional attachment to the shared past, grief over the war that tore the state apart, and, for some, a desire to reunite.
The video is framed through the artist’s personal position, moving from initial confusion toward gradual recognition and identification. By weaving together archival material, historical references, and her own reflections, Bevec examines both the history and socio-political dimensions of Yugonostalgia. The work poses a central question: does nostalgia carry value beyond sentiment?
In Search of Yugoslavia, 2022
The publication In Search of Yugoslavia is a subjective and inexhaustive catalogue of visual material related to the memory of former Yugoslavia. The project reflects the artist’s attempt to grasp a collective experience she never lived, assembling images gathered at home, online, and in the streets of her hometown, Ljubljana.
Bevec traces how symbols and icons of Yugoslavia persist across generations and political positions – even within her own family, where both liberal parents and conservative Catholic grandparents incorporate the symbols and icons of the former ideology. Expanding this inquiry into the public sphere, she documents traces of the past embedded in urban spaces and on digital platforms. Through a flow of associative reflections, In Search of Yugoslavia constructs a situated understanding of collective memory, framing the artist’s ongoing search for a history that is simultaneously present and absent in her own life.
