The series of photographs Owl, Fox, Hedgehog, Deer (2023–ongoing) is an exploration by photographer Jaka Teršek of memory, place, and belonging. The work stems from childhood recollections of forests and games of hide-and-seek around his relatives’ farm. Now living in the city, the artist reflects on a growing sense of disconnection from the world he once imagined as his home, a world of pitch-dark nights smelling of freshly cut grass.

Alongside the photographs, Teršek writes short stories inspired by real events, revisiting familiar landscapes and rituals rooted in his hometown in eastern Slovenia. The interplay between text and image maps a personal geography shaped by memory and distance. The series becomes both a return and a departure: a way of observing, recording, and reflecting on what it means to inhabit a place while being acutely aware of the privilege of leaving it, too.
