Kvet Nguyen (Hoa Nguyen Thi) was born in 1995 to Vietnamese migrants in Slovakia. This clash of two different realities is the basis for every thinking process and eventually the dominant subject in her works. Kvet Nguyen currently studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia. In 2019, she won second place at the World Biennial Exhibition of Student Photography.
In today’s world, I find a painful past with cracks in the present. Photographs are not only proof of those cracks, but they also are connected to my second home that my parents abandoned. The medium of photography is often a tool of power involving humiliating others and maintaining privilege for the powerful ones. I look at the past while finding common denominators in the present times - not only in current political strategies but also in my very own growing trauma on the background of my Slovak-Vietnamese identity. I no longer believe in the boundless state of the entire world but I look for ways out of the repetitiveness of our history.

FOTOGRAF ZONE FESTIVAL 2025 – TALK TOGETHER
The fifteenth edition of the international Fotograf Zone Festival, titled TALK TOGETHER, focuses on language and interpersonal communication in its many forms. This year’s festival will be presented in a condensed ten-day format, running from 3 to 12 October 2025, and will offer audiences new perspectives on how language shapes our relationships, understanding, and conflicts.

Rencontres d’Arles 2025
The Rencontres d’Arles Festival is the world’s oldest photography festival and probably also the most visited. As its name suggests, it is an opportunity for encounters. Alongside the official program, dozens of spontaneous events, initiatives, and exhibitions emerge, both official and unofficial, transforming the town into a vibrant cultural organism. This year, I had the opportunity to experience the Rencontres d’Arles Festival through the eyes of someone who moves between their own artistic and pedagogical practice and above all as someone who believes that photography has the power not only to depict but also to shape the social context.

Robert Gabris – Acts of Provocation and Self-Protection or the Power of Prohibition and Taboos
Robert Gabris’ practice confronts viewers with a provocative exploration of domesticity, queer identity, and societal marginalisation. Keenly aware of the dangers of exoticisation and institutional exploitation, Gabris navigates the complexities of representing Roma life while paying homage to his culture, family, and their lived experiences. This strategic artistic endeavour confronts the harsh realities of systemic discrimination and neglect faced by Roma citizens, while also interrogating notions of inclusivity and identity politics as well as ways of giving back to Roma people instead of providing mere representation.

Kvet Nguyen – Exploring Identity through Photography
How can one seek one's own identity through photography and how can one use the imperial photographic tool in a decolonial way? Through her work, photographer Kvet Nguyen explores the notion of belonging and the diasporic identity of the Slovak-Vietnamese community. The artist examines her family's migration, their integration into the Slovak environment, the concept of belonging and the nature of both collective and individual identity and memory.
