Monika Kováčová works with cast metals to produce monumental objects and spatial installations. Drawing on the Roma tradition of metalworking, she combines this with romantic motifs and personal mythology. Her work examines the process of material transformation, reflecting on its resilience and fragility.

Monika Kováčová

is a Slovak visual artist and music producer living in Prague. In her sculptural practice, she works with cast metals, from which she creates monumental objects and spatial installations. She draws from Roma blacksmithing craft, which she connects with romantic motifs and personal mythology. Her work explores the process of material transformation and addresses its resilience as well as its fragility.

This issue explores language – its forms, possibilities, and limits. We look at how we communicate in the digital space, how the language of artificial intelligence changes our notions of creativity, and how visual images can replace words. You will discover why language is never neutral and how it shapes identity, creates inequalities, and opens paths to liberation. The issue features a reflection by bell hooks, the artistic practice of Eszter Magyar, projects documenting the Roma community in Brno, and visual essays by Claudia Larcher and Tabor Robak. The magazine presents language as a tool of communication, power, and resistance and invites you to reflect on what it truly means to talk to one another today.

Modern science recognises the underground network of fungal fibres, or mycelium, as the “brain of ecosystems”, an alternative to centralised consciousness. It offers a fertile ground for artistic and philosophical inquiry, stimulating deliberations on types of intelligence, models of communication, and the legitimacy of an anthropocentric worldview. Mycelium – worshipped in the religion of the goddess Lacteria, invented as part of the artistic work of Tamara Moyzes – is an empathetic structure, able to sow the seeds of functional and resilient bonds into the cracks of broken social systems.
