Sufian Massalema – Public Showers

20. 6. 2025

Public Showers

in public showers
I wash myself with date jam
from the larynxes of the chickens with throats slit nearby
I scrub off all the freckles with a sponge
on the cheeks, nose and lips

darken every bright spot
on my thin body
in an increasingly thin memory

can I borrow a towel?
of course, it belongs to us all

to dry oneself with the flag of the United Arab Republic
put on a shirt of anise and hibiscus
bathe in the smog of worn-out Toyotas
