A photography workshop exploring the unseen stories behind the image. What happens when a photograph is shaped not by what we see, but by what we remember, feel, or read through the social and political resources. In this workshop, participants are invited to bring a short piece of text: a line from a book, a family letter, a diary entry, or a news article.

Through discussion, reflection, and guided exercises, we will each create a photographic response to these words letting the invisible Image take visible form.

Amak Mahmoodian

is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. She began her career as a research-based photographer in Iran in 2003. Since 2010, she has been living in the UK, unable to return to Iran. She is the author of Shenasnameh (2016) and Zanjirher practice explores gender, identity and displacement, bridging the personal and political. Her work has been shown internationally (Arnolfini, Rencontres d’Arles, Peckham 24) and is held in collections such as Tate and the British Library. She is the author of Shenasnameh (2016) and Zanjir (2019), the latter awarded Best Photo Text Book at Rencontres Arles 2020.

This issue explores language – its forms, possibilities, and limits. We look at how we communicate in the digital space, how the language of artificial intelligence changes our notions of creativity, and how visual images can replace words. You will discover why language is never neutral and how it shapes identity, creates inequalities, and opens paths to liberation. The issue features a reflection by bell hooks, the artistic practice of Eszter Magyar, projects documenting the Roma community in Brno, and visual essays by Claudia Larcher and Tabor Robak. The magazine presents language as a tool of communication, power, and resistance and invites you to reflect on what it truly means to talk to one another today.

Language shapes our world, influences our thoughts, and reflects our societies. In the context of the Balkans, specifically the former Yugoslavia, a region marked by shared histories and divergent narratives, language can both include and exclude. Through the concept of “false friends”, words that appear similar but differ in meaning, this exhibition explores how identity, politics, and cultural memory echo in the language we use, and vice versa. Simply put, we often speak of what we believe are the same notions, not realising we understand them differently. These deceptively familiar terms thus become symbols of regional complexities, miscommunication, and broader cultural and historical tensions.
