Boaz Levin, Esther Ruelfs – Mining Photography / The Ecological Footprint of Image Production

5. 12. 2023

Is photography ecological? From the very beginning, we have known that it works with toxic materials and heavy and rare metals. This book, or rather a catalogue, which was preceded by an eponymous group exhibition, focuses through ten scientific texts on the transformation of the method of photography in the period between the 19th and 20th centuries without losing sight of the issue of mining. From the previously used materials like copper, coal and silver, all the way to the contemporary cobalt, europium and coltan, which are used in smartphones. Through these individual materials, the collection describes just how much the medium itself is connected to the issue of climate change and its impacts on mankind. This ambivalent relationship between photography and nature is accompanied by the rich visuals of historical examples and contemporary artistic projects.
