A new story of art – we need to rewrite Ernst Gombrich. Remove him from mandatory curriculums and replace him with the work of young curator and historian Katy Hessel. The book starts with the words of Artemisia Gentileschi: “I’ll show you what a woman can do”, which is precisely what the author does here. The book bends the perspective of art from the year 1500 all the way to the 20th century. How many women from the history of art before the 20th century do we know? Were there even any female artists in the year 1500? The author has managed to step beyond the margins of global research through a new interpretation of art without men in the gallery system of the West. As such, in pleasant language, modest length, and brilliant content, Hessel perfectly captures the atmosphere and fascination with the works and lives of female artists who can appeal to a mainstream majority and understands the critical context and deceptiveness of our previous, narrow point of view, which fixated on the genius of men.
