Jakub Jansa’s book Club of Opportunities / The Garden of Problems is a visual documentation of his extensive project, with individual episodes gradually presented in various exhibition spaces since 2017. Through the texts of the invited authors (Michal Novotný, Julie Béna, Kamil Nábělek, Noemi Purkrábková, Jozef Mrva Jr., Ernestyna Orlowska, Klára Vlasáková and Jan Bělíček), the publication reveals the themes that the author deals with and the plots and transformations that his main characters go through. One of these characters is the hybrid being Celerista, a combination of a human and the root vegetable celeriac, which can be read as the artist’s alter ego. Throughout the story, this character experiences internal conflicts and gradual identity transformation. Starting out as a populist, Celerista eventually becomes a conscious citizen, gradually climbing the social ladder. The book uses striking visuals, playfulness, sarcasm, and symbolism to provide commentary on social themes, unfulfilled expectations, dilemmas, and frustrations that we face today as a contemporary society.
