The theme of books and their possibilities has been a part of Viktor Kopasz’s life for thirty years. Temporary Objects is an artist’s book that is not a singular handmade original that the author continuously adds to but an issued, distributed publication. It is a “hybrid book” consisting of seven separate booklets, or modules, with short accompanying texts by Jiří Ptáček. Each booklet revolves around a specific theme, anchored either in an object (an apple, the Tatra Mountains) or a basic shape (a circle, a crystal). The individual volumes show the long-term strategies of the author’s work. On the one hand, to place the object within the context of events and phenomena, and on the other, to abstract it into basic geometric shapes and forms. Kopasz is interested in the boundary between image and pre-image, copy and original. The book features visual reconstruction, cyclical layering, individual variations and configurations, visual patterns and selected segments, and wholes and fragments of, e.g., a geometrically cut apple core or a staircase connecting the ground floor and the fifth floor of a block of flats.
