The catalogue for Rinko Kawauchi’s exhibition, M/E, includes her photographic series from the past decade as well as her latest work created since 2019. The title M/E refers to the exhibition as a whole and is a combination of the initial letters of the words “Mother” and “Earth”, creating the word ME and hinting at the unity between the artist and the planet. The new photographic work M/E shows this from two outlooks, two perspectives. On one hand, we have distant natural landscapes of Iceland and Hokkaido, depicting glaciers, waterfalls, volcanoes, caves, and snowy scenes. On the other, these are interspersed with close-up details of everyday life, family snapshots, and still lives captured at Kawauchi’s home during the pandemic. By tracing events through near and far distances, the author suggests the interconnectedness of relationships and the complexity of the whole to which we belong. The images are presented in her typical visual style of soft colours and overexposure, creating an intimate, personal and melancholic atmosphere.
