The critical reader Lucid Knowledge, which documents contributions from the symposium of the same name, views photography as a social document rather than an object suitable for ownership. The publication gathers opinions from international experts on how photography shapes today’s narratives and our perception and experience of the world. Through interviews and real-life story examples, contributors examine the ways information is derived from photographic images. It is necessary to ask what is being communicated (not only provably or figuratively) but also the conditions of photographic production, how a given photograph came to be, and how it continues to affect and hold value for those who receive it. It can no longer be assumed that a photograph is merely a photograph.
