The slim book To Be Determined was published as part of the SPBH Essays series to bring new and provocative ideas into contemporary debates about art. In the opening essay, its author Duncan Wooldridge challenges the orthodox view that photography is primarily concerned with the past and comes up with a radical concept where photography is equally concerned with the future. In a sequence of short, interconnected essays, Wooldridge builds on the canonical texts of photography by philosopher Willem Flusser to reconceive the tools of photography and show how they inform the world around us.

This edition departs from our series of thematic issues, as it is a celebration of the magazine’s twentieth birthday. As is usually the case with birthday celebrations (particularly such important ones), memories of the past intersect with the future. This is why this issue is dedicated to our activities and a summary of them, along with talents we believe in. In place of allotting the second part of the magazine to theory and current news, as in other issues, we decided to create a special edition on a topic that we have been discussing for years – now, the time has finally come to open it, grasp it fully, and thus change the art market in the Czech Republic. The first issue of the Fotograf magazine included a survey that asked leading Czech theorists and curators about how established the medium of photography is on the contemporary art scene and what they believe could threaten it. Twenty years later, the editorial staff decided to return to the survey format once again, this time with the aim of mapping how photography has fared in both public and private collection institutions both in the Czech Republic and internationally in the past few decades, and what we can expect in the future.
